Description
This record comprises a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location CAMAES BAY pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The PROVIDENCE was a wooden sloop built in 1793 at Derwenlas. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 41 1657/3500 tons burthen; 1 deck, 1 mast; length 45.3ft; breadth taken at midships 14.2ft; depth in hold at midships 8.1ft, sloop rigged with a standing bowsprit, square sterned, carvel built. At time of loss the sloop as owned by Griffith Williams of Barmouth, mariner, and the nominated master was Watkin Williams. The sloop's Port of Beaumaris Shipping Register entry is closed with the annotation - '1839 Sunk in Cemaes bay - being run down by a steamer. Register cancelled 11 February 1839.'
