Description
The earthworks noted here are a part of a much more extensive network in an area roughly bounded by the pecked line shown on the NAR record map (ST38NE). Only the earthworks to the N of Bishton Road were examined.

Prominent linear earthworks - boundaries, embanked roadways - are interspersed with fainter features best seen in low light from higher up Llanwern Hill. In particular, beneath the pylon cables crossing the site are traces of ridge-and-furrow. Well-defined platforms are visible at the N limit of the examined area.
Drainage ditches have been dug, the most prominent of which is Monk's Ditch which forms the W limit of the observed remains. A series of close-set parallel linear furrows near the SE corner of the area seem too short to be drainage features and may well be connected with the earlier earthworks.

The visible earthworks span an area some 400m (NE-SW) by 400m and will take two people about 5 days to record. But given the faintness of many features (summer survey would be difficult) aerial transcription should be considered for the entire area, N and S of Bishton Road, as a more cost-effective way of mapping the remains.
