Archaeological remains associated with the ELY are not confirmed at this location, but may be present in the vicinity. This entry is for the Documented Loss of the ELY on 14 January 1945.
Event and Historical Information:
The ELY was a steam trawler built in 1903 by Mackie and Thompson and Co. Glasgow (Yard No. 296, Official No. 118776). The vessel was 183 grt, 33.3m long, 6.6m wide, and 3.2m depth. It was powered by a 3-cylinder triple expansion steam engine, single shaft and screw, and carried a ketch rig. At the time of loss, the ship was owned by David T. George of Milford Haven and carried a Milford Registration (M85).
On 14 January 1945, the ELY sank following a collision with the Canadian Corvette HMCS TRILLIUM (K172). The position of loss is given by Lloyds as 52 48N, long 5 33W in the Irish Sea. Wrecksite.Eu gives a further position of 50 miles N by E of the Bishops Lighthouse. The former position is the one used, which places the loss location in Irish waters, the record has been retained within the NMRW because of the uncertainty of location, which could easily be in Welsh waters.
