Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School for Girls was built between 1969-73 to the designs of the Percy Thomas Partnership. Since 2018 the school has become a mixed-gender school and re-named Pencoedtre High School. Under Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools Programme, a new build school designed by HLM Architects was built adjacent to original school building, completed in 2022 with pupils moving in to the new building in January of that year. The former school building is to be demolished by spring 2023. The redevelopment includes a dining hall, a courtyard, a sixth form area, performance spaces and sporting facilities including an all-weather hockey pitch, grassed football and rugby pitches, games courts and an indoor sports hall. Construction by Bouygues took place from May 2020 - January 2022, and cost an estimated £34.7m.
