Description

Nicholaston Woods (pl.) is identified in documents from which the presence of woodland here in pre-17th century times may be inferred. The woods consist of oak and birch with some hazel and holly. Conifers have been planted in one or two places. A few oak coppice stools are visible, but by and large the woods show all the signs of abandonment, dense undergrowth and unrestrained regeneration. Trackways and earthwork features are visible.
The perimeter boundary is generally vague, there being no consistent earthwork bank around it. Tracks through the woods look fairly modern, cut into sloping ground and revetted on the downhill side. Older trackways are present, in the form of hollow trails, now disused and overgrown. These are occasionally cut through by modern tracks.
Earthwork features within the wood are visible towards its north boundary, at SS 51178807 (a short, low bank, tree-grown), and near its south boundary, at SS 51058795 (a sinuous bank about 160m long). The purpose of the features is unknown, but the latter may be part of a former wood bank.
A study of local estate records may indicate how these woods were exploited. Its physical location within the manor, occupying a steep slope on its margins, is typical for a manorial wood.
