Description

The statue of Griffith Morgan (Guto Nyth Brân) was commissioned by Mid Glamorgan Council in 1990 and created by the sculptor Peter W. Nicholas from bronze. It is sited on a stone plinth donated by Powell Dyffryn Ltd. It depicts Griffith Morgan running barefoot with a whippet dog by his side,

Griffith Morgan was born near Llanwonno in 1700 and became famous as an athlete, winning many professional running races. He died after beating an English rival in a race in 1737 when he was named the fastest man of his time. He is buried in Llanwonno Churchyard. Nos Galon races are held in Mountain Ash every New Year's Eve in his memory.
