Description

Sarah Jane Rees (bardic name Cranogwen) campaigned on the issue of temperance and wanted to create a refuge for women suffering from the effects of alcoholism, either first or second-hand. Unfortunately, she died before she could establish a place.  In 1922, the Rhondda branch of the Undeb Dirwestol Merched y De (the South Wales Women’s Temperance Union) founded Llety Cranogwen in her honour in 144 Kenry Street Tonypandy.  The building is an end of terrace house built in the early 20th century in the relatively new settlement at the time of Tonypandy.  It still stands as a private house.
