Description
The teacher's house for the adjoining National School schoolroom (NPRN 406762), both built in a matching Gothick style in 1827. The house is thought to have become the vicarage around 1852, when it was doubled in size with the addition of the north wing.
The original teacher's house has two storeys with attics raised above a basement. It has stone rubble walls and a slate gabled roof framed by chimney stacks. It faces east where there was a yard or garden, presenting a two window facade with arched windows. The doorway, with fanlight and a timber doorcase, is reached by a flight of five stone steps. The upper storey windows have delicate iron tracery that was originally matched in the schoolroom windows. The rear is plainer, lacking Gothick detail. Within there are two rooms on each of the main floors. The doorway opens onto a small hall with staircase.
The 1852 addition is a taller gabled wing offset from and set at right angles to the earlier building. The tall east gable wall presents an asymmetrical two bay facade with four sash windows. The gable acts as a pediment above a dentiled course. It has a circular window with iron tracery. There are again two main rooms on each floor. The wing has its own staircase.
