The Blaenavon Branch of the LNWR across the heads of the S Wales valleys was opened in 1869 from Brynmawr to Blaenavon. From Blaenavon it rises from approximately 350m to 430m altitude. Single track, partly embanked and in cuttings. A section has been relaid with track and is operated privately as the Pontypoll & Blaenavon Railway.
