Fairwater Comprehensive School was designed by Monmouthshire County council architect Sydney Leyshon as a contribution to the development of the Fairwater neighbourhood by the Cwmbran Development Corporation. The site was acquired by the CDC in 1969, and the building was complete in 1972. The style of the school was radically different to those built earlier in the town, being of a dark brown brick and more inward looking, centred around internal courtyards.
