Description

Fitzalan Municiple Secondary School, Adamstown, was heavily damaged during the Cardiff blitz of March 1941. renamed as the Fitzalan Technical High School in 1953, its present site on Lawrenney Avenue was acquired and the first range (that immediately parallel to the road) was opened in 1964. The school was built to the designs of John Dryburgh, Cardiff City Council Architect, and the further ranges were completed between 1966 and 1968. The school is comprised of a series of four blocks, three using the curtain-wall construction typical of the 1960s.This allows for continuous horzontal bands of glazing that allow well lit interiors, alternating with bands of corrugated cladding in cream and terracotta paint colours (where original). much of the original glazing and cladding has been replaced with UPVC.

The school was identified for replacement under the Welsh Government's Education for the 21st Cnetury programme in 2018 with development of the new school complex on a nearby site underway in 2021. Once completed, the current Fitzalan High School will be demolished.

The school buildings were used for filming the Dr Who episode 'School Reunion', aired April 2006.
