Description

The North Wales coast has several expanses of submerged forest, or peat remains indicating former land surfaces. The beach at Splash Point is one such area, where tree stumps, peat and animal footprints have been exposed. Additionally, finds of mattocks and polished stone axes were made in the area during the early 20th century.

An antler mattock from Splash Point produced a radiocarbon date of 6560±80 BP (OxA-1009; 5640–5360 cal BC). Other finds are later, from the Bronze Age, indicating ongoing human activity in the area, even as the landscape changed as sea-level rose.
