Description
Victoria Park, Ebbw Vale

From a History of Ebbw Vale by Arthur Gray Jones (1970; 1992) p. 269. 'The residence of the Beaufort works manager until 1872 Beaufort House (1783) eventually became an Isolation Hospital in 1902 and an electricity sub-station and store in 1949; houses have been built over most of its ground. Victoria House, 1851, where the Ebbw Vale Manager lived, had a park of 23 acres in which snipe and other game were strictly preserved, a fishpond of 1 1/2 acres, an ice-house, lawns and ornamental gardens. Rebuilt in 1881 because of subsidence, it was abandoned in 1909 for the same reason, and in time the park was overwhelmed by great heaps of colliery waste and furnace slag which have long since buried its lawns and trees. Ebbw Vale House, 1817 is busier and more prosperous than ever, having been converted into a well-appointed Works Club and institution with various sports facilities in the grounds behind it and a Youth Club and the Lever Assembly Hall for conferences, lectures and concerts.
