Description

Earthworks of an apparent zig-zag peat sled-way or steep trackway, sited on a very steep-sided hillslope above Cwm Rhwyddfor. The earthwork comprises two parallel ditches set c.20m apart, with that on the north side largely defined by the line of a hillside stream. Within the parallel ditches are the deeply-incised earthworks of a single zig-zag ditch, probably a worn trackway or sled way in the style of other regional examples (e.g. NPRN 23642 descending from Craig-las on Cader Idris). The earthwork runs for some 200m downslope.

The earthwork has attracted attention in recent years due to its visibility in winter sunlight by walkers on Cader Idris, and its unusual character - one would expect a sled-way to feature wider, less steep zig-zag inclines. It is associated with two or three other plain diagonal pathways which also ascend/descend the steep hillslope here.

Recorded during RCAHMW aerial reconnaissance on 17th January 2022.
