The Caernarfon County School was established in 1820 and later rebuilt on Llanberis Road in 1900. Larger premises were later built along Bethel Road, and became the main focus for the County School. In 1945/6 the school was renamed Caernarvon Grammar School and in the 1950's with the introduction of the Comprehensive system it was renamed after Sir Hugh Owen, an early lobbyist for the introduction of public education. The school has expanded but is still on the same site.
