Craig Pentre ridge fort was first identified by the Ordnance Survey in 1973 and was surveyed in 1988 by Lampeter University’s Ceredigion Archaeological Survey (published Archaeology in Wales 28 (1988), 48). This small hillfort occupies a narrow coastal ridge which projects into the coastal inlet of Llangrannog. On the south side of the ridge is a deep dry valley, enhanced as a rock cut ditch in the Iron Age. The CAS survey identified a gateway at the south-eastern (uphill) side, which gives access onto the summit plateau. Within the sloping hillfort around 13 house platforms were identified, cut into the hill.
With its position on a narrow coastal ridge overlooking a sheltered inlet, and the pronounced cluster of terraced platforms inside, Craig Pentre is almost identical in construction, topographic setting & coastal outlook as the Gribin ridge fort in Solva Pembrokeshire (NPRN 410450).
