Description

Glan Y Môr Primary School was built 1949-51 to the designs of County Architect L. R. Gower to meet the extensive developments taking place in the Sandfields area of Port Talbot. The school was situated on land reclaimed by the removal of sand dunes, and comprised a composite 10 classroom, two-form entry junior and infants' school for 400 pupils. Extensive foundation works were required due to the sandy nature of the site with 2,000 tons of concrete and 100 tons of steel reinforcing bars used in the sub-structure. Building work was carried out in three stages: 1) The construction of the reinforced concrete raft and drainage works by G. Percy Trentham Ltd.; 2) The erection of prefabricated aluminium portion of the school by the Bristol Aeroplane Co. (Housing) Ltd.; 3) The construction of the traditionally built assembly hall, ante-rooms, main entrance hall, film projection room, tank tower, all fittings and decoration, together with the tarpaving and site works by G. Percy Trentham, Ltd.

The Junior Department had seven classrooms, assembly hall, junior and infants' dining halls, kitchen and servery, staff rooms, medical inspection, waiting and recovery rooms, cloakrooms and sanitary offices. The Infants' Department comprised three classrooms, a staffroom, cloakrooms and sanitary offices. The playing field, four and a half acres in size, was covered with imported soil and grass seeded, and extensive planting of trees, hedges and shrubs was hoped to provide a wind break around the school whilst adding to the amenities. Allowance was made for future extensions in the original planning. The school was officially opened on 10 October 1951 by County Alderman Llewellyn Heycock, J.P., Chairman of the Glamorgan Education Committee. As part of Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools Programme, the school closed in 2013 and later demolished with new Awel y Môr Primary School built on site in 2017-18.
