Hay On Wye Primary School is believed to have been built in 1974. Under Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools Programme, a new school was built on site and opened in February 2018, with the original primary school later demolished. In 2020, there were 169 pupils on roll aged 4-11 in seven single-age classes.
