Description

Barry Intermediate School for boys and girls opened in 1896. The girls' school was later separated, and the boys' school became Barry County School (or Grammar School) for Boys until becoming a comprehensive in 1966 following a merger of secondary schools. Barry Boys' Comprehensive School combined the buildings of Romilly Secondary Modern, the Grammar School, and the a newly built Middle School (which had been planned as a secondary modern). A girls' comprehensive school in Barry would have to wait until 1971 and the building of Bryn Hafren Girls' Comprehensive School (NPRN 544640). Barry Boys' Comprehensive School dropped the 'boys' from its title in 1998.

On 31 August 2018, Barry Comprehensive School ceased to exist and a new co-educational school called Whitmore High School was formed in its place. As part of Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools Programme, a new build school was built on site from summer 2019 until July 2021, carried out by Morgan Sindall. Staff and pupils transferred to new school building in spring 2021. Demolition of the former 1960s Barry Comprehensive School buildings took place in August 2021.
