Description

Rectangular gatehouse building on south-east side of main gate to Cwrt y Gollen training camp, of striking mid-twentieth century design. Built as part of the newly redesigned Welsh Brigade Depot opened by HM The Queen on 10th May 1963 (see NPRN 409576).

'When the Regimental Depot at Wrexham closed in 1960, recruit training for the three Welsh regiments was transferred to Cwrt-y-Gollen Camp, near Crickhowell. Following a major rebuild HM The Queen opened the new camp in the presence of the Colonels of the three Welsh regiments with representative detachments from each. Cwrt-y-Gollen was closed in 1986.' The rectangular building features a striking metal parabolic roof, with narrow vertical glass panes infilling the angles; exterior elevations faced with pale stone tiles. Detailing in metal. Inscription over main door in mid-century typeface reads '1960 WELSH BRIGADE DEPOT 1968'. The Powys Pevsner guide notes that architects of the new camp were A.M. Gear and Associates (Scourfield and Haslam 2013, 484: Glangrwyne).
