DescriptionPart of Far Hall Farmstead (nprn 401547), Far Hall was built in 1569-70; its date is known by an action brought at the Court of Great Sessions in 1570. It has a T-shaped plan and is two and a half storeys high, comprising a hall, kitchen and service rooms in the main range with a cross passage and parlour wing on the west side. The house is built of rubble stone, the hall and wing with a coursed rubble south front, under a slate roof. The main range has a central stone-built ridge chimney stack with four diagonal shafts and the wing has a rebuilt end-stack of brick with a diagonal shaft. The parlour wing was probably at least partly timber-framed but was rebuilt in stone in the nineteenth century. Most of the windows date from late nineteenth or late twentieth century restorations, but otherwise the house has been little altered.
