Description

The remains of a rectangular building lie on the west bank of the Afon Wysg, at the foot of the river cutting. Overall it measures 17m long (N-S) and 4m wide. Sub-dividing walls lie at c.6.8m and c.12.5m from the south end to form a structure of three compartments. The walls are reduced to stony banks, in the main, but were probably 0.6m-0.75m thick as indicated by visible wall facings. There are no obvious entrance gaps though the west side of the south end-bay is very slight and may indicate the site of an entrance.
A linear stony bank runs roughly parallel with the east wall of the building. Its total length is c.60m but it is prominent for only 30m, where it runs closest to the building. Here it is 1.5m wide and 0.3m high. It continues north and south to the river as a fainter feature. The function of this bank is unclear. Superficially it forms one side of an enclosure bounded for the most part by the river, though the enclosed area is poorly drained and overgrown with rushes and coarse grasses. Alternatively, it may have been a flood defence for a building located so close to water level.
