Description
Grounds, gardens and other landscaped features associated with Plas-y-Brenin (NPRN 16761). This was the Capel Curig Inn, built in about 1800, and, from about 1870, the Royal Hotel.

1. This garden is depicted on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25-inch map of Caernarvonshire XVIII, sheet 14 (1900). Its main elements on that map include walk, flagstaff, woodland, kitchen garden, greenhouse and well. C.H. Nicholas, RCAHMW, 10th August 2006.

2. The first and third edition County series maps (1889, 1904) provide additional detail. The Inn/hotel is an extensive range ranged along the south side of the highway. The grounds are on its south side, running down to Pont-y-Bala. The original inn, at the centre of the hotel, turned a Georgian face the highway and a Gothick face to the grounds and the Romantic landscape beyond. There was a terrace on the south of the earlier, western, part of the hotel, with a rectangular pool below the western end range. A network of paths wove about the grounds. To the east is what appears to be a large, walled, kitchen garden. On the far side of the highway the ground rises with a series of crags. These slopes were planted with a mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees.
