Description1. Remains of poss. defended enclosure c.96m E/W x 48m N/S, partially obscured to W & S. 2 internal 'corner enclosures', that to E c.30mx32 most visible. Sited overlooking valley to S. Site visible as low parched earthworks in grassland; comprises two small enclosures set within larger enclosing ditch.
Difficult to classify due to non-symmetrical shape, and presence of trees to W & S which obscure it. Erosion may also have destroyed part of site.
Possible prehistoric origins. However, Castleton Manor House to W, (ST02356845), is surrounded by earthworks of fishponds and gardens etc. Therefore poss. a mediaeval site - see Nprn307688.
2. Photographed under drought conditions in 2006 (AP_2006_3127).
