Description
A large creamery complex, opened in 1957/8 by the Co-operative Wholesale Society as a milk receiving station to replace creameries at Builth Wells (nprn 91584) and Ffairfach (nprn 300568). Milk was despatched by road and rail (there was a private siding from the adjacent Central Wales line from 1954 until 1966) to London bottling plants. Milk product manufacture - butter and milk powder - began in 1961, and later came canned products. The factory had a capacity of 280 million litres per annum and was one of only three milk canners in the UK.
The site was latterly run by Associated Co-operative Creameries, part of the CWS, and since 2004 by Dairy Farmers of Britain when it processed 210 million litres of milk a year into evaporated milk and rice puddings. The creamery closed in 2005.
