Smelting works built about 1818 to smelt Cwmystwyth lead using local timber. It used the reservoir (nprn 91751) on the Nant Lletwys for power which from about 1820 also supplied a nearby woollen mill (nprn 91750). The works was disused by 1826 and used as housing. Converted to a corn mill which later failed. Most of the works was demolished by construction of the Vale of Rheidol Railway (nprn 34687) through the site in 1901, leaving only 'Smelting Cottage' at the south end.
