Description

Star Street Independent Chapel was built in 1871 in the Lombardic/Italian style of the gable-entry type. The chapel is stone built in the Lombardic style with a gable-entry plan. By 1996 the chapel had been converted for use as a Sikh temple .

RCAHMW, June 2010.

Star Street Congregational Church (despite its name) has always been located in Copper Street, and was opened in May 1871. In 1972, the Congregationalists merged with the English Presbyterians and Star Street chapel became part of the United Reformed Church. It closed in 1985 and the building subsequently re-opened in 1988 as the Gurdwara Nanak Darbar Sikh Temple. Externally the chapel is little altered but the crossed swords 'khanda' symbol in the gable and a saffron flag signal the new use of the chapel as a gurdwara. Internally the chapel has been adapted as a temple.

This record was created by RCAHMW’s Welsh Asian Heritage Project (2023–24), funded by the Welsh Government’s Anti-racist Wales Action Plan.
