Description
A Roman military settlement centred on a fort or similar enclosure was occupied from about 75 AD to at least 100 AD, sited on a gravel ridge commanding the lowest river crossing of the Towy.

The fort occupied the Spilman Street area and parts were explored in limited excavations in 1988-9, 1985 and 1993. A second phase fort which was reduced in size from the original was also identified. Immediately to the north-east, beyond St Peter's church, is the site of the later Roman walled settlement (NPRN 94432), the greatest city in south-west Wales.
