Hescwm Mill was in the estate of the Bowens of Llwyngwair during the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, possibly earlier. The existing mill building is late eighteenth/early nineteenth century on an earlier site. Formerly two detached corn mills stood side by side. These mills were built on the corner of the mill pond with their overshot wheels on opposite gables. The millpond is fed by two streams.
By the early 1950s there was only one mill remaining; it had been refitted in the 1890s with layshaft machinery from Bridgend Foundry, Cardigan, retaining the earlier 12ft 6in (3.81m) diameter overshot iron and timber wheel. The separate kiln shed is now demolished. In 1994 the mill was restored to working order; only one gear wheel was missing. The machinery includes a complete oat machine and an auxiliary drive which used to drive a butter churn in the the first of two attached lean-to sheds. One pair of conglomerate millstones was in place and one pair was brought from Felin Geri.
