Universal Colliery (nprn 85091), Senghenydd, operated between 1893 and 1928. On 14 October 1913 the colliery was the scene of the worst ever mining disaster in the UK when an explosion killed 439 men and boys. A monument (nprn 410287) to the disaster and a previous accident in 1901 at the colliery was erected on 14 October 1981. On the centenary of the disaster on 14 October 2013, a new National Mining Memorial was unveiled within a dedicated garden: it takes the form of a sculpture depicting a miner leading another to safety.
