Reputedly the smallest town in Britain, Llanwrtyd Wells grew as a spa town following the discovery of waters with healing properties in 1732. It reached its heyday as a fashionable spa town in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and many of its hotels, recreational facilities and chapels date from then. Many of the houses were built to cater for spa visitors and are mainly three or four storeys high.
