A tapering oval enclosure, about 140m north-south by 60m, defined by stone-revetted ramparts, or walling, with an additional rampart and ditch on north, set on a steep-sided promontory, surrounded on all sides, except on the north, by former marshland: excavations, 1963-4, produced late 1st-4th century Romano-British material & structures, including the stock of a minting operation, together with some early medieval material.
