Cofnod Safle

A former tramroad, now a minor road, diverges from the B4246 road at Pen-ffordd-goch towards Pwlldu. The road is straight with an even gradient and bounded by low banks (nprn 260732). At Pwll Du, immediately south of Upper Rank, the minor road curves towards the north, away from the line of the former tramroad. Believed to be an eighteenth century trackway later converted to a tramroad, it is marked as 'Old Limestone Road' on Thomas Deakin's map of 1819. It was constructed to carry limestone from Tyla quarry to Blaenavon Ironworks (nprn 34134) before the construction of Pwll Du tunnel (nprn 85830) and Hill's Tramroad (nprn 85860). A section (nprn 260830) of what may be the same route was observed in June 2000 where it joins the course of Hill's Tramroad to the south west of Tyla Quarries.
