Llawhaden is a medieval and later borough presently now no larger than a village. The borough was licensed to hold markets and fairs in 1281 and there were 174 burgage plots held by 126 burgesses in 1326. The borough was laid out in the shadow of the bishop's castle (NPRN 94109). A hospital was founded at the west end of the town in 1287 (NPRN 32084). The parish church (NPRN 400271) lies in the valley below the castle, where a fine bridge crosses the river (NPRN 24255).
