Event and Historical Information:
The JOSEPH FISHER was a 79nt wooden schooner. At the time of loss on 15 September 1918, it was owned by W H Dann and carrying 149tons of coal from Holyhead to Wicklow. At 2.30pm, it was shelled by a German submarine. The submarine sank the ENERGY (see NPRN 274902) and then returned to sink the JOSEPH FISHER. The crew was forced to abandon ship, after which it was sunk by gunfire at 3.30pm. The crew was rescued by the SS LONSDALE and brought ashore at Peel, Isle of Man. The reported location given for the loss 53 05 00N, 05 17 00W. A poor sonar contact was reported in this vicinity in February 1945, however nothing was found by HMS FAWN during a sonar search of the area in May 1982.
