At Penpontbren Junction, some 2.6km south of Llanidloes station (nprn 43028), the line of the Manchester & Milford Railway (nprn 91660) towards Llangurig diverged from that of the Mid-Wales Railway towards Talyllyn Junction (nprn 407762). A signal box stood on the east side of the line. The physical junction between the two single tracks was originally at Llanidloes station.
