DisgrifiadMorvil 1 stands in the former churchyard of the now-redundant St John's Church, Morvil (NPRN 308790), to the south-west of the church near the porch - some 10m north of Morvil 2 (NPRN 423432). It was first noted in the church, and by 1914 it was standing in the churchyard.
The stone is a rough, quadrangular, dolerite pillar. Dimensions are given as 95cm height x 47cm > 38cm width x 30.5 > 23cm diameter. The stone has a hole part-way down the right said of its carved face, indicating reuse as a gatepost. It is carved with a linear, incised ring-cross, thought to date to the 7th to 9th century. The cross appears to have been recut and its stem and left cross-arm now extend beyond the ring.
