The medieval borough walls originally enclosed a roughly oval area, about 400m north-east to south-west by 280m. The walls ran along the banks of the Usk on the south-west and faced the castle (NPRN 92021) across the Honddu on the north-east. The principal remains are along the roughly 300m southern arc of the circuit, notably the Lower Watergate (NPRN 305721). The western 100m of garden walls along Captain's Walk has been thought to preserve something of the medieval fabric (NPRN 25182). At the eastern angle is a 24m stretch of wall with the remains of a tower (NPRN 275616). A section on the north-east side (NPRN 25719, 25721) is thought to be modern.

Associated with: Medieval & later borough (NPRN 32994).
