DisgrifiadNAR SS87NW29
This is a restored medieval preaching cross in the churchyard of St John the Baptist's church, Newton (NPRN 96086). The four-step square plan base, 3.3m across, and the weathered socket stone are original features. The present shaft, topped by a crucifixtion, replaced a stump in about 1890.
Churchyard crosses such as this were the focus for funerary ritual as well as offering a platform for intinerant preachers. The cross is an important element in the liturgical infrastructure of the fine late medieval church.
