1. A branch canal was built in l8l7 across the valley floor to join a railway from Cwm Gwrach collieries. At the junction (SN 8553 0456) is a derelict wharf-house and at the terminus of the branch canal are the remains of a lime-kiln (SN 8700 0497).

The kiln, now blocked, was located between the end of the nearby branch canal (Cnel Bach) and the Neath River Bridge of the tramroad leading to collieries in Cwm Gwrach and Vernallt Ironworks. It was built into the south face of the tramroad embankment and is now incorporated into a cattle shed (NMRW record card notes, S.R.Hughes, 1975)
Shown as 'Old Limekiln' on OS 25-inch map (1st ed., 1870s).
