Straining tower and access bridge, built 1881-1892 as part of the Vyrnwy Dam project, the tower extracts and strains the water at the beginning of the pipeline. Romantic looking tower standing 52m high. Constructed of mass concrete with snecked faced local rubble. Circular tower with machicolated parapet; above parapet the tower is octagonal with pyramidal roof. The base of the tower houses three strainers with adjustable inlet pipes. The entrance to the tower is just above this at washing-floor level. The engine room, reached via a spiral staircase, retains its original equipment.
