Waun-y-Coed Colliery, Pontardawe, was opened in 1828. It is situated on the east bank of the River Tawe. A tramway from the colliery crossed over the river to two coal tips, on the north bank, at the extreme end of of the branch canal. The colliery closed in 1876. It consists now of a drift entrance with engine house base, chimney and tippling wall, adjacent to a scheduled tramroad incline.
