The sinking of the two shafts at Tirpentwys Colliery began in 1878, the first coal was raised in 1881, the owners at that time was Darby and Norris; by 1884 the ownership had changed to the Tirpentwys Colliery Co. Some years later the Tirpentwys Black Vein Steam Coal and Coke Co. was formed and they operated the colliery until nationalisation in 1947. The colliery had a fine vertical winding house and a Daglash steam capstan; the fan house contained a Walker from c.1890. The mine was closed in 1969.
