2. A barge lock built by William Kirkhouse in 1817-18 to allow vessels of up to 50 or 60 tons to lock out of the Neath River and reach Swansea by means of an earlier canal constructed in the l780s. The stub of this canal can be seen passing under a bridge beside the barge lock. Nearby is an interesting canal junction bridge and overflow from the later line of the Tennant Canal.
