Jacket PIll Lock is a barge lock that was built by William Kirkhouse in 1817-1818 to allow vessels of up to fifty or sixty tons to lock out of the Neath River and reach Swansea by means of an earlier canal constructed in the 1780s. The stub of this canal can be seen passing under a bridge beside the barge lock. Nearby there is an interesting canal junction bridge and overflow from the later line of the Tennant Canal.
