A well preserved set of garden terraces lie to the west of Carew Castle (NPRN 92709), facing across the waters of the Carew River. These are probably part of the extensive late Medieval-Tudor gardens that furnished an appropriate setting for the castle (NPRN 301206).
The terraces extend along a front of about 140m with an overall depth of some 66m deep. The well defined lower terrace is some 95m east-west by 20m, having its eastern & western sides canted back. The terraces can be identified with gardens west of the castle noted in a survey of 1592. It is possible that the Carew River was damned at this time, both as a millpond and an ornamental lake (see NPRN 40230).
