This fish trap complex is located on and between Salmon and Parson Scars. The scars are two natural stony banks, the outer edges of which delineate an area extending approximately 700m east-west and 800m north-south. The area between the scars forms a natural sandy basin, which sits on a submerged forest within a peat shelf. The fish trap complex is located on and between the two scars, and utilises their natural banks. The man-made elements comprise low dry stone walls and stake lines for nets. All traps except NPRN 519284 consist of more than one wall type. Walls consist of lines of posts bedded in low stone walls, substantial stone walls, or interior training walls leading to a cod-end/sluice. Also present are several lines of stakes (NPRN 519278, NPRN 519279, NPRN 519277 and NPRN 519275), which held fixed nets in place. The location of this complex, amid shifting sand and muscle beds, suggests the probable existence of further, as yet unidentified fish trap features.

Event and Historical Information:
Documentary sources indicate the presence of 3 fish traps in this vicinity in the Middle Ages, but it is uncertain which, if any, of the present features equate to these. Oral evidence indicates that the remains of derelict fish traps were rebuilt in the 19th century by the Davies family. NPRN 519288 (Y Cag) was rebuilt, and a new wall, NPRN 519272, was constructed in an attempt to enlarge it. When this enlargement failed the original wall of Fish Trap A (Y Cag) was reused. Oral evidence provides two accounts of known attempts to build new fish traps: NPRN 519273 (Polyon Ifan), which is thought to have been a failure, and a trap comprising posts and horizontal timbers (possibly NPRN 519283, NPRN 519285 and 519282). The present complex was last worked by the Davies/Philips family, with Fish Trap A (Y Cag) being the last to be worked in 1963. The complex was recorded during a number of visits by RCAHMW staff between 1980-2003.
