This was erected in the third quarter of the C19 and used to impound stray animals after fairs and markets until they were claimed by their owners. It is an open rectangular compound of rubble stone with larger dressed quoins and added rubble cock-and-hen coping. The front has a segmental-headed doorway with keystone and rock-faced voussoirs and a replaced boarded door. It is flanked by narrow slits. The side walls each have three similar narrow slits, with wide embrasures.

It was listed as a rare-surviving building type representing the former importance of Caerwys as a market town.
