Royal Alexandra Hospital, Rhyl, designed by Alfred Waterhouse, was built as a children's hospital and convalescent home and opened in 1872. The West wing and central block were added later and opened in 1902. The East wing was completed 1908-1910. The building is built to a pavilion plan, of brick with stone dressings and plain slate roofs. It is notable for the integral balconies and verandahs designed to provide fresh air to patients. The chapel, with its richly crafted interior, designed by John Douglas, is a special feature of the building.
