The West Breakwater of Burry Port Harbour is a battered rubble stone and rendered construction which protects the entrance on the west side of the outer harbour, which in turn leads to the East and West Docks. There is a long line of thin stone slabs placed on the edge of this breakwater to form a windbreak, and there is also a harbour light.

Opened in 1832 and superseding Pembrey Old Harbour- which had opened in 1819- Burry Port Harbour was originally known as Pembrey New Harbourand was served by tramroads and the Kidwelly & Llanelly Canal. It is now listed for its special interest as a rare surviving example of an earlier nineteenth century coal harbour combined with an important early transport system serving the local industry.
